Integrative Medical Care

The goal of integrative medical practice is to explore the healing potential that lies within and to help to become active in exploring different aspects of health, looking at disease and disease prevention from a mental, physical and emotional standpoint

Our MDs and NDs work together to to offer medical advice for common general practice problems, promote preventative medicine, lifestyle counselling and to use natural interventions such as nutrition and exercise whenever possible including functional medicine. Integrative medical care combines conventional Western medicine with an array of complementary treatments such as nutrition and stress reduction techniques, all in the effort to treat the whole person.

Dr. Adrienne Junek, MD, CFPC

Integrative Medical Doctor

Dr. Adrienne Junek completed her MD at the University of Toronto in 2013 and her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Ottawa in 2015.  She has had a longstanding interest in integrative medicine and currently offers both primary care and integrative medical care to patients at OICC.  Dr. Junek began collaborating with both naturopaths and chiropractors when she organized and participated in a longitudinal student exchange program between the medical, chiropractic, and naturopathic colleges during her medical school years in Toronto.  Currently, she is pursuing Dr. Andy Weil's 2-year fellowship in integrative medicine via distance education through Arizona Centre for Integrative Medicine.  She looks forwards to sharing the knowledge she gains through the fellowship with her patients and providing integrative medical care in a collaborative setting at OICC.

Mikaela Viljoen, RN

Registered Nurse

Mikaela graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2012 with a BSc in Nursing. She has practiced nursing at The Ottawa Hospital for the past 6 years, working primarily in Surgery and Trauma. Although she loves caring for her patients at the hospital, it has been wonderful for her to be involved in a completely different side of health care at the OICC. Mikaela has always appreciated the importance of treating the body as a whole, as well as using lifestyle changes and integrative medicine to improve health and alleviate illness. She loves getting to know the patients in the IV suite and seeing firsthand the improvement they feel from their treatments at the OICC.

Voices of Support

“For far too long, disciplines have worked in isolation without communication and our patients have often felt caught between differing therapeutic philosophies, often to their detriment. This is a wonderful initiative. An integrative program will help provide a much needed bridge.”

Shailendra Verma, MD, FRCPC, FACP (chair)
Medical Oncologist, The Ottawa Hospital
